History seems to seep from every crack and crevice in Sabine County. The courthouse square at Hemphill, one of the most unusual in East Texas, is surrounded by quaint buildings, antique stores and gift shops.
Called Red Mound at first, it was renamed to honor Ben Milam in 1835. It was designated the seat of government that year for what was then the “Municipality of Sabine.”
